The great thing about DIY is that you can make anything any size you desire. For these shelves I wanted them 4 feet long and to be a little chunky. The original shelves I made followed the Ana White tutorial but I wanted a more cohesive look so I found another great tutorial by Bitterroot DIY

These are extremely simple, really only taking 2 pine boards each!
For these I bought:
-one 8ft 1x3
-one 8ft 1x12
which built one 4ft long 12inch deep shelf that was 3inches thick.
First step is to measure the 1x12 (top and bottom part of shelf) to the desired length MINUS 1.5" and cut 2 of those pieces.

Next is to take the 1x3 (or whatever width board you want for the face of the shelf) and cut each side at 45 degree angles with the shortest (inside) part of angle to the length of your shelf MINUS 1.5" For example below I was making 24" long shelf so the inside of my angles were 22.5" long

Next you clamp the top and bottom boards with the front piece, wood glue and brad nail.

It will look like this from the side:

Next you take the remainder of the 1x3 and cut a 45 degree angle on one side and straight cut on the other to the depth of your shelf, creating a "cap". You will need two of these like example below.

than clamp the sides with wood glue and assemble with brad nails.

Wood fill all the nail holes, and than sand.
Before sanding:

After sanding:

Next stain the color of your choice!
VIOLA!!
