The internet has a way of getting into your mind and showing you every product you don't necessarily need, but want. This stool kept being shown to me over and over again but with a price tag you know I am not into! Finally I decided I could easily make this myself, so I did!
What you will need:
scrap 2x10 (at least 10" long)
sander
miter saw
drill & driver
3 wood screws
paint & stain
Step 1:
Using your miter saw, cut the dowel into 16" pieces. After you have the 3 legs set your miter saw to 15 degrees and trim one side of each of these dowels so they have this angle on the bottoms. Next drill a small hole about a 1/2" deep on the opposite flat side (without the angle cut) of each of the legs. Set them aside.
Step 2:
Take the 2x10 scrap piece and cut it down to a 10" piece so that it is a square. Set the miter saw to 22.5" and make small cuts to the corners of this square, rotating as you go until it starts to become a circle. This could also be done with a jigsaw but I liked the rougher edges this technique gave. Once it looks like a circle, sand the entire piece smooth with low grit of 60 to shape and high grit 220 to smooth. Lastly, find center and mark it on the bottom.
Step 3:
Place the metal angle plates centered around the center dot you made. Mark the outline of where they will be placed. Now you need to secure each angle plate to each dowel leg. When securing be sure to have the short end of the angle on the leg be upright and the thicker part of the angle plate be upright. Secure with 2" screw. Next place the legs with the angle plates back on the circle piece and secure with the screws provided in the kit.
Step 4:
Stain the entire stool. I used Minwax Special Walnut. Once this is dry, tape off the bottom legs (I went up 5.5" but you can do however much you prefer) and paint the bottoms white. Remove the tape immediately after painting and let it dry. I used a Polyurethane coating the next day.
Their you have it! A cute little stool dupe for your plants, nightstand or bathroom caddy. Best of all it cost less than $20 bucks!
