We wanted a granny unit on our property for awhile and just could not figure logistics out.....until now! We had an existing structure that I thought, "why not just convert that into a studio?" Well that is exactly what we set off to do starting last August. Below are the before pictures.

This was by far the biggest project we had taken on and you can check out the highlight reel on my Instagram labeled Studio if you want a quick recap, start to finish! We did a 5ft by 17ft addition to the existing tack room that would become the new shower, toilet, vanity and closet. This ended up being only approximately 350 sq.ft living area but so cozy and perfect! We added a side door to enclose a private side yard that really added to the space almost doubling the size and feel. Our intention was to host travel nurses and then switch to airBNB if the hospitals in the area were slow and so far we got our travel nurse tenant and couldn't be more pleased with how everything turned out!
People overestimate what they can do in a day, and underestimate what they can accomplish in a year.
Finishing the Studio in 6 months
We set out to have this finished by the end of 2019, needless to say that was a crazy thought but we still managed to finish this entire project by mid April of 2020 with only starting this past August. Given we did most of the work ourselves with the help of the best step dad around, Grandpa Rich when it came to the foundation, framing, electrical and plumbing (HA aka everything) we did pretty good!
So many little (big) DIY projects I was working on while the big construction was being done by my husband and Grandpa Rich, like building the kitchen cabinets, making faux beams, floating shelves, complete closet build, privacy wall, accent wall, etc. I tried to think of everything I could get done before the drywall was done so that when I got the okay to go in I would be ready to just install and have everything done. Check out all the tutorials on the blog, but first enjoy the finished product below!

I hope you love it as much as we do and now for the next project.....hmmmm.
