Flooring, Archways, Bookcase Built-ins, Side Doors

This past week I think I really made up for the time I spent on vacation! Lets dive right into it.

Flooring

I managed to find a pretty similar flooring to what he have throughout our entire house since that one has been discontinued. I definitely was swayed by the price because it cost less then $200! It is a laminate by Shaw floors and I will say, it is not the most durable flooring by any means but the fact that I could leave with it that day and save a ton of money was all I needed to hear. It went down pretty quickly as I was able to finish the entire room in one afternoon. I found this in stock at a local flooring store but here is an online site.

Archways

I have been dying to take these doors off and transform these into arched openings and finally it happened! Well, it is still in the process but it is crazy how much more purposeful these openings are. Below you can see the general idea of how I created these but in the coming weeks I hope to do a full tutorial. These are very inexpensive to make, just time consuming when it comes to the drywall! I only managed to get one coat on one of the archways but hopefully by next week they will be done!

Bookcase Built-ins

They are going to be beautiful aren't they?! When the shelving went up it immediately made this room feel so much more grand. I built these using two 30" upper wall cabinets for the base because they are much shallower (only 12") and this is a narrow space right next to the stairs. I ripped down a 1x8 to enclose the base and just yesterday started making the shelving. I calculated a depth for the shelves so that I could make all of this using one piece of plywood. The shelving is only 9" deep and I took it all the way to the ceiling. I have a lot of fun things planned for this area so be sure to follow along to see the rest of this come together! Also, the light will be centered and upgraded once all the dirty work is done.

The big question is what color to paint the cabinets. Pretty good hint as to what color I am leaning towards in the picture above! Any and all recommendations send them my way!!

Side Doors

It was a big debate on whether or not to make this design change but as you can see we did. The original plan was to put new picture windows on either side of the slider and enclose the bottom 20" of the wall. These two doors were removed from the entryways that lead into this room (currently being turned into arches) and they are heavy duty exterior doors. They happened to be the exact same size as the openings on either side of the slider so we decided to just reuse them! This decision saved us almost 1,000 bucks!! I mean why wouldn't we do that!

We are still finishing up the molding which should be done today and then I will be painting this entire wall and the doors so that everything blends together. I just received the new door knobs and ordered some window panels that hopefully will look like what I have in mind!

Whew! What a week it has been! For the first time I feel like I might be able to pull this off in time but their is still a ton to do. Hopefully this next week I will get paint on the walls and bookcases so that I can finally shift my attention to the main focal point of the room, the fireplace/desk area that is pictured below!

Be sure to check out all of the other participants in the One Room Challenge here and cheer them on!
