One Room Challenge: Week 2

Well this week has been a messy one! I chose this room because we knew it was not only a room we needed to make more functional but also one that we knew had to have it's subfloor repaired. With that said I started out by removing all of the existing flooring that I actually made out of pine wood myself back when we first moved into this house. These easily came up but the next flooring that was beneath did not! The original flooring that I covered up with this pine years ago was tile (and I now remember why I chose to just cover it up all those years ago!) Removing all of the tile was quite a task but well worth it. I unveiled the damaged subfloor, which thankfully was only in the area we suspected when we renovated our deck this past summer.

One of the big decisions was whether or not we would enlarge the openings of the 2 doors and make the pot belly stove free standing or not. Ultimately we decided on only making each of the doorways about 5" wider, taking them flush to the edge of the brick fireplace on the adjacent wall so that I don't get in over my head! I did however start taking the back side of our pot belly stove down and removing the wall pop out to give more room. When the drywall came down we found that the pot belly stove was actually a retrofit added to an existing fireplace! At first I was sad because we had this huge insert I had to work around and thought about making it into a brick tower but after more research we found out it could all be removed. So after almost finalizing my plan for this room complete with a tower, I changed it around to now be the location of my husbands desk.

Since the flooring is needing subfloor repair I turned my attention to the ceiling! My first big DIY for this room is to make faux beams! I made a full tutorial on how I make my faux beams and it is such an inexpensive attainable project that makes a huge impact.

I decided to go with four beams running down the ceiling and I will anchor them with an amazing chandelier from Kichler centered in the middle that I can't wait to share with you all!
Lastly I also planned out the wall on the left side, which now that the desk can be moved to the middle of the room where the old fireplace was, I will probably mirror this plan on the right wall as well. I plan to get two upper kitchen cabinets to use as base cabinets since they are much shallower and we are working with a tight space. I will then create shelving and bookcases above those. We will also be replacing the big picture windows on either side of the slider with shorter ones so that a bench seat can be added to the corner under the windows. This will offer seating and also be much more affordable given the size of the windows. I apologize for the extremely bad drawing below!

With week one in the books for the One Room Challenge I have a HUGE task list ahead of me especially because this next week I am in Kauai and I am literally writing this blog post from my hotel! So next to nothing will be getting done until I come back for week 3! You can definitely expect ALOT coming up, as I will be hitting the ground running! Like always be sure to keep following along with all of the other participants in the One Room Challenge, their are some amazing rooms in the making!
